A Change Of Plans - Again

Our original plan was to head from the Monarch Reserve in Ocampo to Oaxaca, but we were jonesing for some beach time, so we decided a little revisiting was in the cards.

Our first stop was Patzcuaro where we have been before in 2006. We did the big highlight stuff last time so we were able to be a little more laid back this time. We found a hotel/RV park that was a good price and had hot showers so we paid for two nights and set up camp.

The first night everyone was friendly with folks from Canada, Colorado and Oregon there when we arrived. The next day a VW bus pulled in with some folks from Seattle and their two dogs and, for whatever reason, the mood changed. As easily as they took to us they decided not to embrace the newcomers. We did and found them to be just fine.

The next morning as the four of us were discussing staying another night and heading to see the Patzcuaro version of Carnival the grandma owner of the RV park and an elderly lady who had been coming to the park for 25 years were talking and pointing at the newcomers' vehicle. A couple of minutes later the camper half of the conspiracy blew up like a rear-ended Pinto when a neighbor dog barked and got the VW couple's two dogs barking.

When she was finished with her tirade I took a deep breath and pointed out that her tirade was not an acceptable form of communication and that she could and should have tried being kind at least once before such a display. She was quick to offer a but laden apology, or a non-apology as I like to call them.

Since it was apparent that the newcomers would not be able to stay another night and I was offended by the whole thing, we decided not to stay a third night, and pack up and head to Playa Saladita on the Pacific Coast. It is only a little more than 3 hours to drive there so we popped up to El Centro Patzcuaro for a peek on the way and were treated to a Carnaval parade anyway along with some photos of the town to boot.

The Library in Patzcuaro. Wow!

There were many bridges on the pretty drive south.

Man! What a great decision! Playa Saladita was the perfect place to go. It is mostly a surfer place and surfers are likely the most laid back and accepting folks on the planet. The first night we stayed in the van at a restaurant on the beach and the next day we moved next door to Paco's campground so we could pop our tent up and enjoy the breeze and the stars at night.

Mango has a brother named Coco. His owner was a young woman hanging out in Saladita.

Lola is one of Gina and Mack's dogs.

The Patzcuaro outcasts.

Anna is their other dog and she is camera shy .

We were chilling in the shade of the van when some knuckleheads honked right behind us. We turned and it was Mack and Gina - the couple with the VW bus we met in Patzcuaro. They decided to trust us and check out Playa Saladita and found it the perfect place to de-stress as well. Their dogs joined the many others at the beach enjoying dog beach life and nobody was offended.

After three night on the beach we decided it was time to head south so we found a place with a pool in Zihuatanejo for two nights for a total of $35 where we are as I write this. The drive took 40 minutes from Playa Saladita, but we stopped in Troncones to see what had changed since 2006 and found paved roads and a lot more tourists, but still a nice stretch of beach.

Tonight we went to the Taco and Music Festival that supports the local Red Cross. We shared a table with three Mexican ladies and one of them had two grandsons with them. We conversed in Spanish and ate way too much.

Our Familia for the Taco Fest.

There were about 20 different tacos to choose from.

A cervezaria near the Taco fest. We were early and it was hot.

A rug shop in Zihua

Zihua Bay

Soccer fields near our place for the last two nights.

Today we will continue down the coast a bit. The day after we will head into Puerto Escondido where we hope to meet back up with the folks who shared their wine with us at the Monarch Reserve in Ocampo. This time we'll buy the wine and hopefully get to cook for them as well.

We hope this post finds you all happy and healthy.

Peace and love peeps and more soon....
